My discovery of Facebook followed within a year or so. I was absolutely amazed by the power of this social network site! With one click I could see what was going on in my children's lives. I saw what their friends were saying, read their posts that indicated that they were dealing with personal challenges (and might need some "MOM" help), and I felt involved and informed.
Then, in 2007 my first grandchild was born! It was a wonderful and joyous time, except that she was in Denver Colorado, and I was in Chatham. BOO!! Although I was fortunate enough to have a visit every 4-6 months, that just wasn't enough! I worried that my little granddaughter would never really know me, or recognize my face or voice.
Again, Facebook came to my rescue. My wonderful Daughter-in-law was so reliable in posting new pictures of the baby on Facebook very frequently. With these pictures I was able to follow her growth closely, and I saw the daily and weekly changes. I didn't have to settle for every 6 month photos mailed by snail mail! I got to see her instantly with the click on Facebook. And, I could save, print and share all of the photos that were online. It was a Godsend to this Grandma. I still remember the excitement I felt every time I opened Facebook to discover new pictures. Joy. Pure Joy!!
This is when I started to think about all the people that don't have access to a computer, or the knowledge of how to use a computer, or the money to invest in the machinery and internet connection! Why should these people be denied the joy that I have every day connecting with my friends and family instantly online? They shouldn't!!!
